Mission Weekend 2015

Mission Sunday, 7th June 2015

The Mission Core group wanted to explore a ways of enthusing our church about world mission, so on the 7th of June we invited a range of guests from different mission organisations to spend the day with us. As well as hearing updates from old friends like Ronnie and Margaret Sim and Catherine Grier (about to depart for Chad once more), we heard from Jonny Fenn-Tye of BMS, Kathy and Drew Given of OM, Richard Fraser of WEC and Marilyn Armstrong of Interserve. Instead of a single sermon, each of these was given a slot with a different focus on the role our church can play in World Mission today.

The children in Sunday school were treated to their own ‘Round the world’ experience, with activities which gave them a taster of the countries where our missionaries work.

After a varied and inspiring service, we all sat down to an international-themed lunch, during which we were kept up-to date with our link missionaries’ latest news. There was a bit of time to mingle over pudding and to take a look at the stalls which the visitors had set up too.

But the afternoon was not yet over for our young people (their stamina is legend!). The Impact YF were able to take advantage of so much mission experience and expertise in the room through a Q&A panel. Some young people joined us from other fellowships too, which was encouraging. Colin Carmichael of SU also came to share about more local mission opportunities for young people.

Overall, the day felt like it achieved what we set out to do – to put world mission firmly into focus once more.

It did feel a little rushed though. If we were to do something similar again it may be worth having fewer guests in total, or to spread their opportunities to share over morning and evening services. I’m happy to hear any views on this.

Finally, a huge collective thank-you to all who made this day possible and who worked so hard to make sure it went smoothly. Special mention has to go to Catriona and her team for the gargantuan effort to create a wonderful, memorable lunch!
